The Federation's prototype RX-77-2 Guncannon was designed as a heavily armed support mobile suit for its' brother units RX-78-2 Gundam and RX-75-4 Guntank. Over the course of the One Year War, the Federation created variations of the Guncannon to be outfitted for specific roles. The Guncannon was revamped into several designs, one of them being the RX-77-3 Guncannon Heavy Arms Type. Although it is mostly an external update to a normal Guncannon, it was proven a great success and fielded for combat on Earth.

As of right now, the Guncannon Heavy Arms is considered the second strongest Federation Support type suit in terms of defense and stopping power (second to the Full Armor Gundam). Improving on most of the strengths of the regular Guncannon, it carries a very nearly identical set of armaments, the only difference being that the Heavy Arms carries a new set of shoulder cannons with a slightly decreased range, but cause a higher amount of damage upon contact compared to the regular Guncannons cannons, while still maintaining the same amount of ammunition. The Heavy Arms currently has the largest amount of base HP in the game (16000 for LV1), its armor is also slightly improved to better protect the Heavy Arms from Shell and Beam attacks. And in addition to all these improvements, the Heavy arms still keeps the same number of Custom Parts slots as its predecessor. Unfortunately, though the Guncannon Heavy Arms builds on the Guncannons strengths, it also enhances its weaknesses. Its armor rating in regards to Melee defense is identical to to the normal Guncannon, and its movement speed is drastically reduced by comparison, making the Guncannon Heavy Arms the slowest moving mobile suit in the game. And in addition to these weaknesses, this new Guncannon has a 50 point higher Bounty over its predecessor (making the LV1 Guncannon Heavy Arms a 300 Bounty suit), and has a longer respawn time. Reckless use of this one suit may essentially mean an easy victory for the Zeon team.
